Automatic tracking system will look after drunken passengers at the Japanese stations

The Japanese are very hardworking people. Most of the Japanese employees work so hard during the work week that closer to its end, the only way to somehow remove the accumulated stress is to get a good drink. Since the Japanese actively use electric trains and the metro, often drunkenness leads to accidents: poor people simply do not keep on their feet and fall off the platform just under the train. To reduce the number of accidents, the railway company JR West has developed a special project.

At all stations belonging to this operator, special automatic tracking systems will be installed. These cameras, using specially designed algorithms, will look for common signs of intoxication among people present in the frame. For example, if a person sits too long on a bench, skipping one train after another, or simply wandering aimlessly around the platform - the computer system will certainly pay attention to it and inform the station staff about it.

While cameras were installed only in one place - at the Kobashi station in Osaka, which is closest to the business center of the city. But in the near future the management of JR West plans to install similar systems at its other stations. And this is not the first such initiative from this rail operator. Earlier this year, the company's specialists published studies that prove that it is impossible to have benches at the metro stations at the metro stations: a drunk man, hearing that his train is approaching, jumps up from the bench, loses balance and flies straight to the rails.

All this may seem ridiculous or even ridiculous to you, but, unfortunately, the reality is that 60% of accidents involving trains occur precisely with drunk people. Against statistics, as they say, you will not trample. Perhaps, such an initiative, indeed, will help save human lives. And this means that the efforts of JR West engineers were not in vain.
