Created self-charging camera

Создана самозаряжающаяся фотокамера

At first glance, this camera looks like a very old device that takes pictures with the help of a daguerreotype. But the appearance is not the main thing, after all, according to the clothes, as usual, they only meet, but see off completely by other criteria. This camera is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Judge for yourself: in digital cameras photodiodes convert light into energy, in solar batteries they accumulate this light. Specialists at Computer Vision from the American University of Columbia created a self-sustaining camera, forcing photodiodes that convert light into electrical discharges to do double work, namely, to convert and store energy simultaneously. Unlike conventional cameras, here each of the photodiodes is connected to a special circuit, which allows to save some of the energy in the capacitor for subsequent recharge.

The work began with the creation of a single photodiode of dual action, capable of capturing one pixel at a time. The shooting of one photo took about an hour, but it was worth it. Now the camera shoots 1200 pixels at once and takes a picture every second, displaying the result on the external display.

Currently, the team is working to reduce the size of the camera, and also plans to increase the speed of shooting and resolution. Thus, the invention can be useful in security systems, for filming in the wild and even in space. The main thing is that there should be light.
