DARPA will finance the creation of a camera capable of seeing objects hidden around the corner

Amazing technology, which literally glances around the corner without looking out for it, was invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012. The creator of the technology, Andreas Velten, faced the problem of financing his research quite quickly, why the development of an unusual laser camera was suspended. However, the US military from the DARPA agency came to his aid. They invested $ 4.4 million in the invention, which allowed Andreas to continue his work.

Over the creation of a camera that can see objects hidden from its lens, now working a team of scientists from the Morgridzhsky Research Institute. Of course, all studies are conducted under the guidance of Andreas Welten. The idea of ​​Welten was quite simple, but at the same time difficult to implement in technical terms. The camera emits a laser pulse, which is reflected from various surfaces and objects in its path. Some individual photons reach the camera lens, and then an algorithm comes into play, collecting fragmentary information from these photons, into a three-dimensional image of what's around the corner.

The camera captures images every 2 picoseconds (1 picosecond is a trillionth of a second), so the distance traveled by photons can be measured with incredible accuracy. Additional funds received from the military will be used to improve the technology, increase the detail of the 3D-generated objects and reduce the camera itself, which until the language turns to be compact. Of course, the speed of its work, too, leaves much to be desired, because to create an image of invisible objects, at the moment it takes several minutes. Scientists plan to shorten this time to 10 seconds. Andreas Welten himself claims that in four years the camera will be able to enter the arsenal of the US Army.
