Toshiba will sell Sony's photosensor business

Toshiba is close to to sell its business unit System LSI Semiconductor, which manufactures photosensors, to another Japanese company, Sony. This deal is planned as part of the company's restructuring plan, which was announced earlier this year. This acquisition will further strengthen the position of Sony in the CMOS sensors market, a third of which already belongs to this Japanese company.

The deal is estimated at about 20 billion Japanese yen, which when translated into the western currency is 164.7 million dollars. Sony will receive not only all Toshiba's patents related to the production of photosensors, but also a plant in Oita in the south of Japan. Some of the plant's staff will retain their jobs and just go to work in Sony. After the transaction, Toshiba plans to completely withdraw from this business.

In the spring of this year, Sony management announced plans for the company to invest more than 45 billion yen in the production of photosensors in the current fiscal year, which will end in March 2016. In the same year, Sony expects an increase in sales of sensors for smartphones, cameras and even for cars with autopilot for 20 %, which, according to forecasts, will result in the company's revenue in the amount of 4.4 billion dollars.

It should be mentioned that at the moment Toshiba is recovering from a rather scandalous scandal, during which it became clear that the company's management illegally overstated the company's profits for six years to increase its prestige in the eyes of investors.
